Record Start to 2026 in Sarajevo Tourism: Visitors Are Now Staying Longer

Sarajevo, the heart of the Balkans, has made a fast start to 2026 with its historical texture, cultural richness, and unique hospitality. Official tourism data from the first month of the year indicates that Sarajevo Canton is not only attracting more tourists but also significantly increasing the time guests spend in the city.

This positive trend at the beginning of 2026 reveals the success of the city's tourism strategy and its growing appeal as a global destination.

January 2026 by the Numbers: Steady Growth

According to the monthly statistical data of Sarajevo Canton, city tourism experienced active days in January 2026. Throughout the month, a total of 50,546 guests were hosted in Sarajevo, and these visitors generated a total of 152,798 overnight stays.

Foreign tourists continue to make up a large portion of the visitor profile. The recorded 40,018 foreign tourist arrivals and 126,601 foreign overnight stays are clear proof of Sarajevo's popularity on the international stage.

The Most Important Data: Tourists Can't Get Enough of Sarajevo

When we compare the January 2026 data with the same period of the previous year (January 2025), a much more meaningful and exciting picture emerges.

While there was a steady increase of 3% in the total number of guests compared to last year, the real boom occurred in overnight stay numbers. The impressive 26.9% increase in total overnight stays signals a significant change in tourist behavior.

This data tells us this: People are not just coming to Sarajevo; they are staying in Sarajevo for longer. Visitors no longer see the city as a weekend route to be consumed quickly, but as a destination where one can get lost in its streets, experience the culture deeply, and enjoy it thoroughly. This means increased added value for the local economy and tourism stakeholders.

The Unchanging Owner of the Summit: Turkey

When ranking the interest shown in Sarajevo by country, Turkey is once again at the top by a wide margin, due to deep-rooted historical and cultural ties. Turkey is in the position of being the country that both sends the most tourists to the city and generates the most overnight stays.

Other "most interested countries," showing how wide Sarajevo's attraction area is, are as follows:

Regional Interest: Intense demand continues from neighboring and nearby countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Slovenia.

Global Interest: In addition to powerful European economies like Germany and Austria, the high share in overnight stay numbers from tourists coming from distant markets such as China, the USA, and even Saudi Arabia is noteworthy.

A Promising Projection for 2026

This momentum achieved in just the first month of the year offers a very promising projection for the rest of 2026. If this significant upward trend in overnight stay durations continues, Sarajevo tourism could sign its name to records in 2026.

The authentic experiences the city offers seem likely to continue convincing visitors to stay longer.
